An ‘anti-corruption’ fashion wave is hitting the streets as the heat for Anna Hazare rises. Although over 74, Hazare is still causing a stir in the fashion world by starting this new trend. A t-shirt company has launched ‘anti-corruption’ t-shirts and are making serious money by cashing in on Hazare’s movement. Those who have been selling Hazare clothing have said that it is flying off the shelves.
At Tantra T-shirts, head of operations and sales, Vimal Mariwala has said, “we wanted to wait until 15th August to release these shirts. Hazare was set to begin on the 16th August so we decided to hold off releasing the shirts.”
Mariwala goes onto say, “Anna Hazare has become something of a cult hero to the youth and if you look at our merchandise, you can see that he is the star of it.” The company is not sure whether political t-shirts will be a sustainable model but they hope to produce them in future, even if they are not so successful at retail. Since he began his fast however, Hazare t-shirts have been selling faster than ever.
Owner of X-tees, Manoj Vijay Kumar, says that, “after recent developments, sales have gone up over 60%.” The sales of fancy hats, according to Inkfruit, an online portal, have given way to the now more popular Nehru caps – which have now become known as ‘Anna caps.’
Raja, who owns Bharat Handloom, located in Sadar Bazaar has said that they have sold over 400 caps in a single day. The company introduced the caps when they saw the frenzy around Hazare begin to start. People can also virtually support Hazare through an online game, Yes Prime Minister.
