Some of London’s most promising emerging fashion design talents are due to receive the BFC NEWGEN sponsorship, supported by TopShop. The British Fashion Council (BFC) has announced the 18 awardees who will come to centre stage in London Fashion week, February 2011.
Established in 1993, NEWGEN has enjoyed an eminent status as an internationally recognised talent-spotting scheme and has been the heart of the BFC talent management and development programme. Over the years it enriched the fashion world with many prestigious names such as Alexander McQueen, Jonathan Saunders, Boudicca, Meadham Kirchhoff. Owing to such reputation, The scheme grew to be one of the main attractions for international media and fashion houses in London Fashion Week.
‘As usual, this season’s talents are promising of great things to come. They have shown remarkable innovation and drive,’ said Caroline Rush, Chief Executive of the BFC. ‘Many of NEWGEN’s alumni have gone to create international brands, a testimony to the scheme and the talents with which it presents the fashion world. We also would like to thank Topshop for their continuous support.’
‘Not only did our NEWGEN designers grow in creativity, they also grew as businesspersons capable of managing their brand and selling to high end retailers worldwide,’ added Sarah Mower, The BFC’s Ambassador for Emerging Talent. ‘It is refreshing to see that they didn’t lose their sense of community. They are contributing to the local economy through the manufacture and exports of their collections.’
‘Fashion is all about renewal and innovation; it is vital to keep pumping new blood into the industry. NEWGEN have committed themselves to keep the supply of talent flowing, and we at Topshop are excited and proud to be a part of the process. This year’s award is full of interesting talents. We are excited to see the established Mary Katrantzou, Louise Gray, and David Koma alongside the emerging Felicity Brown and Thomas Tait. This year, as the previous 9, will be a great success,’ expressed Mary Homer, Managing Director of Topshop.
