Fashion Industry News

The event titled “Wearing Your Sunday Best” and was held at the Old Post Office in Newcastle’s Pink Lane. It was conducted by The House of Seduction as part of their Newcastle Fashion Week celebrations. The fashion extravaganza event had the catwalk showcasing risqué dress and lingerie that was seductive to add zing to the show.

Swimwear “vintage style” and lingerie were the main fashion wear that adorned the stage. The event had a photo-shoot with a difference done by Pearman Photography. The models had their hair done up by ND Make-up that gave them the looks of the 40’s. There was music added to the show by Scarlet Street as well as a set of DJ’s.

The event had begun in the day with the catwalk taking place in the Northumbria University campus where TV reality stars were also present on stage. Ollie Locke from Made in Chelsea beamed by E4 channel and Lauren Pope from The Only Way is Essex aired by ITV2 being the reality stars to host the show.

On Saturday there was Caryn Franklin, known as the ID Editor and former Clothes Show presenter, who had hosted the catwalks. There was also Victoria White, the Company magazine editor who gave a talk on the first steps into the fashion field.

To commemorate the fashion week, Van Mildert would be selling their designer goods at just £10 today. This process of selling off excess fashion stock at throw away prices is common in London, Milan and New York. For Newcastle residents however, this is the first ever occasion.

The sale would be going on at the Fat Buddha restaurant on the Swan House Roundabout. Claire Lake from Van Mildert expects to have a large queue for the items they are going to put up on sale. For premium ticket holders there is also going to be an exclusive show of collections from Vivienne Westwood, Armani Jeans, Stone Island, Ralph Lauren and many more top designers.

This month, Newcastle Fashion Week will be presenting all sorts of exciting events in addition to the latest catwalk fashions; the promo cites celebrity guests, makeovers, shows with models’ hair by Y Salon and much much more. It’s a big event, but certainly not the first time Newcastle has been home to news-making events in fashion and otherwise.

Fifty years ago in 1963, an historic event took place at the Old Assembly Rooms on Fenkle Street. It was called Turners Photo Fair, a venue for camera enthusiasts to get together, and to practice their photographic skills on models dressed in the latest fashions of the day.

Northeast Film Archive, an organisation that collects, preserves and provides access to films and TV footage relevant to the history of north eastern England from the earliest days of motion pictures, has footage of the event. It shows models posed against unusual backgrounds including bathrooms and a haystack, but the real impact was just part of the contribution made to the public and the film industry by Turners Cameras and Photography.

Turners started out as a pharmacy but back in 1932 Jack Turner made what was then a daring move, and started selling cameras from his shop. In the first year he sold £30 worth, but the year after that his sales doubled, and continued to increase so that by 1938 the photographic side of the business was booming, with steadily growing public interest in cameras and photography.

A wide range of top quality equipment as well as high standards of customer service made Turners a leading dealer, and by the 1950′s Turners was making a lot of short films for local organisations and businesses. As photographic technology progressed, Turners did too, investing in the newest and fastest processing procedures and outdoing almost all of the considerable competition.

By 1988 Turners had closed all its shops and photo labs and formed a new company concentrating on film and television. By 2001 the company no longer existed, but there were at least 2,000 films made by Turners Film Productions and many, like the Newcastle Photo Fair, can still be obtained through NEFA.

Sustainable Development is not something we often attribute to fashion, but there is such an award as part of the Queen’s Award ceremony, and a local Cornish fashion firm has won it in the latest results, earlier this year. This is in fact the first time in the history of these awards that a local fashion company is named as the most sustainable out there, which is quite a pride for the small community.

Historically, the firm Seasalt, winning of this award, had started working with organic cotton back in 2005, and even then they were fully sustainable, getting their Soil Association certificate for the production process that they used. Seasalt has quickly grown into one of the largest fashion company in Cornwall, employing over 200 people in its production which, to this day, remain fully sustainable.

Speaking at the award ceremony, the CEO of the business said that this was a fabulous recognition for such a local company, and that they were very honoured to receive the Queen Award. Everyone in the company is working hard to provide good quality products while maintaining a business model that is environmentally friendly, which is not always easy to do in these modern economic times.

He added that despite the economic situation in the country, this was a great time for the company, and that they were lucky to have so many loyal customers who keep coming back to local providers of fine clothing. Seasalt provides products to over 1.2 million catalogues and 15 shops that it owns across the country.

Thanks to its own presence and the 350 retail stores that carry its outfits, the firm is well set to surpass its constantly growing market, and it seems like there is a market for sustainable development after all.

The fashion of Bond

April 9, 2013

When 007 appears in any of the films (23 to date) about the exploits and frolics of Britain’s best-known spy, we expect him to be cutting edge not only in his coolly invincible decimation of the bad guys and his casual bon mots. James Bond and company (that would be female company, and plenty of it) will also, we know, be ‘dressed to kill’ in the most glamorous sense of the phrase.

In the latest Bond thriller Skyfall, the ‘company’ includes the requisite gorgeous women including Berenice Marlohe as Severine, the femme fatale who meets our hero in a casino, wearing a most remarkable black dress for the occasion. The designer, Jany Temime, said that gown took six months to complete, and almost did her in.

Jany told Vogue magazine that her picture of a ‘Bond girl’ is ultra-sexy, and she wanted to make this one look “as naked as possible”. The result is a form-hugging sheath with no back and sheer panels that at first glimpse give the impression of near-nudity. However the sheer fabric was dyed to match the wearer’s skin tone, with added tattoo-like transfers, and the overall effect is stunning, to say the least.

What took so much time was the addition of 60,000 Swarovski crystals, each one applied by hand, that shimmer over the entire surface of the gown. Jany said she and her assistants had to create six different versions of the body, and each time Berenice changed into this gown, they “. . .had to sew the body onto the main part of the dress while she was wearing it . . .”. Now that’s what you call custom design.

On the other hand, dressing Daniel Craig for his Bond role in ‘Skyfall’ was, according to designer Tom Ford, not a major endeavour. Ford considers the job to be a great opportunity, but not really a big challenge, since the character is “. . . a bit like our guy – classy and extremely elegant.”

H&M’s Divided Grey

April 7, 2013

In the past, H&M’s Divided Grey fashion range and concept was only made for the guys, leaving females that liked the sedate, grungy look out of luck. However, females can now enjoy the look as well without settling for squeezing into guy’s sizes by checking out the new Grey Concept made to be the female counterpart of the Divided Grey line exclusively made for them.

Available officially November 1st online and in stores, fans of the Divided Grey concept can get an early look by checking out the new H&M video. Although it is only a quick one minute video, it offers a pretty good overview of the emotion and vibe that the Grey Concept is supposed to carry with it.

The video vibrates the emotions of garage rock with a distinctly grunge appeal in the clothing that will remind most people of the early nineties. The line may be called the grey concept, but what it really seems to be composed of is plenty of black and leather. In short, you can pair just about every item in the Gray Concept range with a leather jacket or tights. If you have stringy hair, that’s just a fun bonus.

Overall, the new H&M range is going to be too dark for some people, but as the ‘grey concept’ for those who want to have some fun out at the clubs or rock clubs there ought to be plenty of fun pieces that are worth checking out. Most pieces can be interchanged with each other for entirely new outfits making each item a great basic buy.

Tom Ford is one of the most popular designers in the industry whose first foray into the film world resulted in an Oscar nomination. Ahead of London fashion week, he is now preparing for his first ever catwalk collection for the occasion.

The celebrity fashion designer gave birth to a lot of myths and strange stories, most of which are actually true. One common story states that he usually takes five baths a day. When asked about the authenticity of the story, he agreed instantly and even became surprised that some people bathe less than five times a day.

Ford has been on the spotlight for more than three decades now, and a lot of nominees of the BAFTA awards will wear Tom Ford, though none of these have confirmed it officially. However, superstars like Daniel Craig and Bradley Cooper are passionate admirers of his designed clothes.

Ford has decided to showcase his newly designed women’s collections in London, this decision has provided London with a unique honour which was enjoyed by Milan in the previous years. Among the few details leaked about the event, the most striking one is the widened guest list.

According to Ford, the London show will be for 500-1,000 people including bloggers and photographers. As he loves to control every single aspect of any of his events, he oversees each element starting from the cloth shapes to the stage structures, he loves to promote himself as an absolute perfectionist controlling his own world.

Thomas Carlyle Ford was interested in beauty and fashion from his early years, he studied architecture, fashion and acting as a student. He has been working with his partner Richard Buckley for more than 25 years now. He got his first break from Gucci when he was offered the post of Chief Women’s Designer of the company. Ford has tuned this $150m company into a $2bn giant when he left it in 2004.

By showing a collection based on a phoenix theme by a designer who belongs to Japan and who has also dressed the famous singer, Lady Gaga to represent touches of rich traditional ways of Mongolian decorations, showing it by the designers at the Japan Fashion Week clearly states that they have set their eyes firmly on the huge market of Asia.

Chinese consumers are the world leaders in purchasing luxury goods, and they account for almost a quarter of the luxury market globally along with growing demand, as per a recent report conducted by a consulting firm Bain & Co.

Although, the great extravaganza of fashion started at the weekend showcasing some great collections for autumn and winter of 2013/14, but the Japanese brand made it presence on the stage only on Monday with famous Masanori Morikawa with a self directed label of his own,” Christian Dada”.

Morikawa has also created many pieces for famous US Pop star Lady Gaga, which includes a pink dress that is reminiscent of origami crane that was for her 2012 album “ Born this way” and its tour.

This time the designer took inspiration from Asia and came up with an androgynous and edgy collection that was titles as “Fenghuang”, which in Chinese means the famous Phoenix bird, it was paired long with loose pants along with richly embroidering done on the lace on sleeves of shirt for both men as well as women.

Leather jackets and pants mingled well with trousers of down- panelled and plain shirts, also colours of white, black, blue, red and gold, that as per Morikawa represented the actual nature of this mystical bird. There is another believe that phoenix contains both male and female within itself, so we decided to take this fusion concept for our collection,” as Morikawa told the reporters.

Another Asian influence was seen on the floor, when on Sunday the famous designer from Mongolia, Arjunna Surenjav, blended modern designs beautifully with traditional forms on the bunched sleeves and shoulders.

“ Part of this clothing design from where the material moves up on the shoulder, basically comes from old tradition followed in old Mongolia, there local people who were generally noble and well respected, wore that kind of design,” says Surenjav.

The Forum was buzzing last week at the Norwich Fashion Week 2013 with a full night of fashion being shown to fans who had gathered at the entrance. New collections could be seen coming from many independent shops as well as some high street businesses, and they were showcased on a catwalk to the amazement of a crowd reaching over 400 people.

A lot of the city’s diversity was shown in the exhibit along with a strong offering from independent stores. Among those shops we had department store Jarrold which brought clothes fashion for both men and women to be shown alongside some of the more costly results. A new twist from Vanilla, a well known brand, could also be seen.

Some representatives from Norwich could also be seen in the name of Ethika with designers Twisted Tailor and Marian Eve Williams along with a lot of eco-friendly garments from some bigger names like Hatters, Ginger and Jonathan Trumbulls. Those proved that they still have their fingers on the pulse of fashion, and they can still inspire collections.

Some less independent shop owners included the high street brands Debenhams and John Lewis. Lewis in particular showed the Somerset line by Alice Temperley, a collection that they offer exclusively in their stores, while Debenhams showed the results of Henry Holland, a designer that does women clothing along with Red Herring for men outfits.

All was not simply about clothing however, with designer Lisa Bambridge from Norwich showing her jewellery and created a buzz in both media and crowd with her Aurum set. The exhibition highlighted some of the increasing connections between local and nationwide retail designers. This show was produced by Louise Lace from Norwich Fashion Week and it proved to be one of the most popular platforms for fashion in the region this year.

According to sources from Kantar Worldpanel, the M&S fashion brand lost 0.4% of their shares in the market and underwent a 1.3% decrease in retail sales in the weeks after the 20th of January. However, as much as M&S suffers through the ordeal, high end brand Zara and lower end budget chain Primark showed a doubling of sales, as with H&M, Next and Debenhams as reported by the Sunday Times.

Because of the increase in other retail chains and the decrease in sales at Marks and Spencer, there will be a lot of pressure on CEO Marc Bolland especially after the devastating results that came after the Christmas holidays. Studies show that sales have decreased by 1.8% in the United Kingdom from the 29th of December up to those following weeks as well as a devastating 3.8% blow on general merchandise.

The Marks and Spencer group had taken ex Debenhams and Jaegar chief Belinda Earl to improve the face of womenswear and ultimately give the brand a once-over. However, Earl had mentioned that their last trading gig had felt that it was a “greatly promotional and very challenging” retail market and that it lacked time to further apply their plans on improving the brand.

Thus, the new Autumn Winter collection spearheaded by Earl will only be launched this July, quite late considering that other retail chains launch their collections right before the season starts. Judging from their increase in sales, it looks like avid shoppers are more attracted to low priced fashion that Primark offers.

The Kantar figures were taken from the National Statistics, which reported a decrease of sales in January due to the snow affecting several areas of the United Kingdom. Kantar was not available for comments while Marks and Spencer refused to give out comments as well.
