topsho 300x225 Topshop and Topman go off to VegasTopshop and Topman, two leading British clothing retailers, will be opening branches in the Fashion Show Mall, Las Vegas in March. Shopping centres along the Strip had all canvassed the retailers but they have decided to sign up with the Mall. This will mean employment for more than 160 people throughout the 10 year lease period.

Established in England in the early 1960’s Topshop concentrates on women’s fashion and accessories. It has branches throughout 20 countries worldwide with its main store on Broadway, New York. An additional store is due to open in Chicago and the Las Vegas branch will be the third in the USA. Topman stores are the men’s clothing provider.

According to General Growth Properties vice president, Laurie Paquette, the retailers have said a great deal about Las Vegas in choosing to open in the city. Both the local population as well as the tourist will be delighted at the opening of the store. At the London  Oxford  Circus branch more than 205,000 shoppers visit the 30,000 square yard mega shop each week.

Kate Moss,  famous supermodel, designed her first ever collection for Topshop. Up until now Topshop has been trading through the well known New York clothing store, Barney’s. The retailers highlight designer clothing and matching accessories plus cosmetics at a very affordable price.

Topshop has become one of the fashion industries greatest success stories as well as a leader in style and class. They set the modern trend with their up to date and fashionable clothing while at the same time paying close attention to providing excellent service to the personal shopper.

The two retailers will occupy premises on the first level of the Fashion Show Mall. They will be situated near Forever 21 and will have nearly 23,000 square feet of space available. They will be taking over premises previously occupied by J Crew in addition to premises presently housing Gap and Levi’s, both of whom will shortly relocate to  within the mall. Building and re construction has been planned for the latter part of the year.

topshop 300x223 Topshop blasted for pushing anorexia like modelAnorexia support groups caused an outrage because of a controversial image Topshop had put on their homepage of a model who appeared as a size zero. Topshop has since removed the image.

After campaigners for females with eating disorders complained it may cause health problems in adolescents, the fashion store still defended their use of the model’s image. Codie Young’s image appeared on the home page of the store and one mother of an anorexia sufferer said it may make her daughter relapse.

The shot was replaced last night by Topshop. The image had the teenager with stick thin arms and waist and had to be changed due to the pressure from charities. The new image has Ms Young appearing healthier although thinner than someone her age.

The store said they understood the comments and said the original shot could distort Ms. Young’s proportions to maker her neck look longer in proportion the rest of her body and make her head look too big. But they say Codie is healthy and refuse to cut anymore photos of her from their catalogue.

Now the questions have moved to why they used the photo in the first place. With the young model looking gaunt and appearing with size zero proportions which is a British size four.

The photo caused many to complain as the clothes seemed to just hang limply off her body which was skeletal beneath the clothing. One Anorexia researcher said that girls seeing this on the internet will think that the ultra-thin proportions are ok.

This is not something that should be in magazines and Topshop is not helping the situation by promoting this as being the correct size. For girls to see these photos could be quite damaging. The size four is obviously available in Topshop stores, implying that it is healthy to be so tiny.

Karen Easthall, from Norfolk runs a support group for anorexia and said that is was appalling for Topshop to promote such a thin model. Her daughter, Hollie 16, spent over four months in hospital with anorexia. She has started to recover but her mother feels that if she were to see the photo she may relapse.

Topshop says responded after all the negative publicity and have taken the picture down. Topshop has all the confidence that Codie Young is healthy and does not feel the necessity to remove anymore of her photos.

In the piece references were made to the sunken eyes of Ms. Young but that is not true. Topshop also said they only retail size 4 in their petite range. This range would not be appropriated for Coodie.

Topshop Christmas Video

December 10, 2010

Topshop has launched its new Christmas fashion film, which highlights the key trends for this year’s Christmas period and the party season.

The festive fashion film is directed by Angelo Pennetta and features model Ashley Smith and stylist Francesca Burns showing off the hottest pieces for the Christmas period this year.

The video helps Christmas party-goers create some beautiful looks, whether they plan to stay in with friends or head out on the town.

Some of the keys trends this season include diamante scattered fishtail gown and sequin shift dresses which create the Christmas sparkle. Any look can be toughened up with the help of lace-up boots and chunky knitwear to help keep out the chill on the cold December nights.

The Christmas period is also about tassels and textures, so the addition of leopard print or faux fur can keep any outfit right on trend. And as its Christmas, it’s important to sparkle, so anything with sequins or gems will look perfect.

The new festive fashion video shows that a variety of looks can be created from Topshop’s latest collection, no matter what style customers are going for, as there is something for everyone. Looks can differ from beaded knits, leopard print coats and capes to party frocks with huge bows and pearl encrusted heels to the grungier look of ankle socks and lace-up boots.

Any Christmas look can be topped off with lashing of eye-liner, smudges of kohl and red lipstick, as shown in the video and created by make-up artist Hiromi Udea.

Topshop, the award winning clothing retailer, has announced the launch of its new Spring/Summer collections, combining casual, sassy streetwear, festival trends and sleek military inspired sportswear.

For Spring/Summer 2010 Topshop has embraced four distinct styling trends with its new Parisienne, Meadow, Downtown and Saloon collections.

The Parisienne collection offers flirty, feminine and fun styles featuring stripes, polka dots and pearls combined with flouncy dresses, boucle jackets, embroidered tees and accessories. Blouses, prim tailoring and casual tees also feature in this collection, with spotty tights and oversized bows adding a playful touch.

The Meadow collection invites customers to take a trip to the English countryside with billowing chiffon, bleached denim womens jeans and delicate florals that conjure up the impression of a summer’s day. Toughened-up with studded waistcoats, lace-up boots and leather accessories, lace, crochet and intricate embroidery in the collection are given a harder edge for spring.

Mixing experimental fabrics, futuristic shapes and sporty detailing, the Downtown collection has a luxurious, yet pared down aesthetic, with a laid-back, urban edge and slinky harems with hidden zips, bodycon pieces in graphic prints and leggings with power mesh inserts.

From womens blazers to luxe joggers, these sporty, versatile separates offer a bold, bright edge with futuristic prints and fluoro accessories.

Saloon, the final collection in Topshop’s Spring/Summer 2010 range, features a series of cancan ruffles, saloon inspired frills, broderie anglaise and delicate cutwork. When teamed with indigo denim, beaten-up leather and casual canvas, the dusty coloured tulles and sun-faded prints reflect the warm, heady nights of the Wild West. The pretty patchwork and faded Americana prints prevalent in the collection are embellished with accessories boasting fringing and tassels.

Kate Moss Topshop Christmas 2009 collection launches October 29 2009. The collection presents an assortment of luxurious yet sophisticated oriental-inspired pieces for day and evening festive wear, along with an exclusive lingerie preview online.

Influences of traditional Chinese and Japanese clothing run through the collection. The Cheongsam dress, normally made in embroidered satin is brought up to date in a gunmetal lurex knit whilst kimono shape dresses in chiffons and silks offer a sensual laid-back style. The sleeves on the ‘Geisha Rose’ print blouse are voluminous and bell-shaped. Prints of bamboo, flying stalks, lotus flowers and fireworks are flamboyant reflecting the richness of the orient.

Knitwear is given glamorous details, offering comfort and sparkle for winter dressing. A soft grey cashmere tunic is dressed up with a silver beaded obi belt whilst two classic knit crew-neck jumpers in slate grey and navy are spruced up with jewelled shoulder pads stitched to the outside of the garment. A series of lurex-striped shrugs and sequinned knit waistcoats when worn over a casual outfit add instant night-time luxury.

The black rectangular jagged sequin bandeau maxi dress epitomises festive party-wear mixed with Kate‘s signature rock-n-roll style. Elsewhere a traditional floral beaded long sleeve dress is one-shouldered and the skirt of a strapless mini dress is covered in black mesh petals and gold beads. Snake print leather obi belts wrap around smart dresses and ostrich feathers adorn the sleeves of a shift dress.

Continuing from the previous season, Christmas embraces chic, smart tailoring. An exquisite satin pencil skirt in navy or black is asymmetrically buttoned down the front and a black grosgrain boat neck shift dress is the ultimate in ladylike dressing. A shrunken Victoriana jacket with frogging and cornelli detailing is easy to wear, and a jacquard Princess coat with jewelled buttons stands out from the collection.

Underwear makes a prominent return this season, with the debut of nightwear and an exclusive online preview of the new lingerie range. Beautiful printed chiffons in triangle shape bras and teddies are feminine, whilst a leopard print balcony bra with an eyelash lace trim has instant sex-appeal. Floral printed silk pyjamas are adorned with an embroidered ‘K’ and come with a drawstring bag in the same material making it the perfect gift for Christmas.

When asked what the inspiration was behind the new nightwear collection, Kate said: “I love beautiful nightwear, it makes you feel great. I’ve collected millions of vintage slips, nighties, camis and bed jackets. Who doesn’t want fab nightwear for Christmas?”

Topshop and Emma Cook have been working together for several years, producing much-coveted clothing and accessories that have caused a sensation. Following hot on the heels of the success of her recent shoe collection, Topshop introduces a seven-piece capsule collection for summer, in-store from the end of July.

emma cook spring summer 2009 Emma Cook Summer/Spring Collection 2009 Now at TopShop

The latest womens clothing collection by Emma Cook for Topshop is influenced by Emma’s SS09 collection for her own label, taking the naïve animal motifs she has become known for and translating them for the high street. Deers, zebras, lions and stags stalk across fine silk tunic tops and dresses in the palest of greys and hide out on simple jersey separates, all perfect for hot summer days. Whilst prints are playful and child-like, shapes are decidedly chic and grown-up. Vests and dresses have lace bib inserts and ruffle hems. Colours are soft and muted, with grey, stone and pastel pink taking centre stage.

Stand-out pieces include the silk vest dress with the repeating animal motif, and the effortlessly simple tunic dress emblazoned with the head of a deer. In jersey, the vest mini dress with the ra-ra frill hem is sure to be a sell-out.

Following on from her currently available range of high heels, Emma has also designed two quirky statement shoes for Autumn/Winter 2009, which will be in-store from the end of August. The first has a wedge heel with a fringed ankle and patent utilitarian laces, and comes in either zebra-print or dalmation-print pony hair, or wine coloured leather. The second style, again with a wedge heel, has a zip-front and tassles, and is available in taupe or black. Like Emma’s SS09 ‘brothel creeper’ boot, these are attention-grabbing shoes that make the most fashion-forward of statements.

Topshop is renowned for working with style heroes of the past, present and future, and this spring marks its coming together with Barbara Hulanicki. Continuing from where she left off in the 70s, Barbara Hulanicki rejoins the fashion world with a new series of clothes for Topshop.

barbara hulanicki at topshop Barbara Hulanicki Collection at Topshop

While rich with reminders of Biba in its heyday, the collection is a distinct move away from the pretty designs of the past. Clothes are brought up to date by modern prints and edgier shapes for a new generation of fans, making Hulanicki one of the most influential and inspirational style icons of the 20th century.

Having spent the last 15 years designing furniture and hotels worldwide, Hulanicki has reverted back to her first love of fashion illustration as the starting point for the collection. The enchanting ‘ladybug’ and ‘headscarf girl’ designs appear on delicate chiffons, the bold ‘enlarged animal print’ is splashed over silks and jerseys, and quirky large placement sketches of fashion girls stand out on T-shirts and accessories.

The Hulanicki collection takes on a split personality of Good Girl/Bad Girl dressing.

A playful, floaty silhouette in bright coral, pink and pale turquoise tones characterises the Good Girl. A flirty printed dress with Hulanicki’s trademark elegant puff shoulders is echoed by daringly short skater skirts, culottes and playsuits in chiffons and silks. Billowing smock blouses are grown up, while a bright pink ‘ladybug’ print cropped corset top and coral animal print body are aimed at the younger customer. The dramatic black maxi jumpsuit with tie shoulders is the stand out piece and most reminiscent of the collection’s 1970s origins.

A seductive off-the-shoulder body-con dress in lilac jersey with a teasing print on the bust appeals to the collection’s Bad Girl. Mini dresses are bandeau or halter neck in figure hugging jersey for a laid-back sexy look, and a cropped suede jacket with matching high-waist hot pants in khaki. The large prints used on these clothes are repeated on several simple jersey T-shirts for a more accessible and casual take on the look.

Beachwear finishes off the womens clothing collection with a ‘headscarf lady’ printed retro-shaped bikini set and oversized floppy sun hat in either bright or pale pink, and a large beach bag emblazoned with the ‘silhouette girl’.

On her collaboration with Topshop Barbara said: “Top Shop has always been the first shopping stop when I am in London. They work in the same fast thinking, ‘It won’t be there the next time so make a snap decision’ attitude that we developed in the 60s and 70s.”

Mary Homer, managing director of Topshop added: “It is an honour to be working with one of my own personal fashion heroes. Barbara’s approach to fashion is as bold and inspirational now as it was in the 70s. The team has loved working with her and I know our customers will love this collection”

The new Hulanicki collection came on sale from the end of April.
