Fashion News

This month, Newcastle Fashion Week will be presenting all sorts of exciting events in addition to the latest catwalk fashions; the promo cites celebrity guests, makeovers, shows with models’ hair by Y Salon and much much more. It’s a big event, but certainly not the first time Newcastle has been home to news-making events in fashion and otherwise.

Fifty years ago in 1963, an historic event took place at the Old Assembly Rooms on Fenkle Street. It was called Turners Photo Fair, a venue for camera enthusiasts to get together, and to practice their photographic skills on models dressed in the latest fashions of the day.

Northeast Film Archive, an organisation that collects, preserves and provides access to films and TV footage relevant to the history of north eastern England from the earliest days of motion pictures, has footage of the event. It shows models posed against unusual backgrounds including bathrooms and a haystack, but the real impact was just part of the contribution made to the public and the film industry by Turners Cameras and Photography.

Turners started out as a pharmacy but back in 1932 Jack Turner made what was then a daring move, and started selling cameras from his shop. In the first year he sold £30 worth, but the year after that his sales doubled, and continued to increase so that by 1938 the photographic side of the business was booming, with steadily growing public interest in cameras and photography.

A wide range of top quality equipment as well as high standards of customer service made Turners a leading dealer, and by the 1950′s Turners was making a lot of short films for local organisations and businesses. As photographic technology progressed, Turners did too, investing in the newest and fastest processing procedures and outdoing almost all of the considerable competition.

By 1988 Turners had closed all its shops and photo labs and formed a new company concentrating on film and television. By 2001 the company no longer existed, but there were at least 2,000 films made by Turners Film Productions and many, like the Newcastle Photo Fair, can still be obtained through NEFA.

According to sources from Kantar Worldpanel, the M&S fashion brand lost 0.4% of their shares in the market and underwent a 1.3% decrease in retail sales in the weeks after the 20th of January. However, as much as M&S suffers through the ordeal, high end brand Zara and lower end budget chain Primark showed a doubling of sales, as with H&M, Next and Debenhams as reported by the Sunday Times.

Because of the increase in other retail chains and the decrease in sales at Marks and Spencer, there will be a lot of pressure on CEO Marc Bolland especially after the devastating results that came after the Christmas holidays. Studies show that sales have decreased by 1.8% in the United Kingdom from the 29th of December up to those following weeks as well as a devastating 3.8% blow on general merchandise.

The Marks and Spencer group had taken ex Debenhams and Jaegar chief Belinda Earl to improve the face of womenswear and ultimately give the brand a once-over. However, Earl had mentioned that their last trading gig had felt that it was a “greatly promotional and very challenging” retail market and that it lacked time to further apply their plans on improving the brand.

Thus, the new Autumn Winter collection spearheaded by Earl will only be launched this July, quite late considering that other retail chains launch their collections right before the season starts. Judging from their increase in sales, it looks like avid shoppers are more attracted to low priced fashion that Primark offers.

The Kantar figures were taken from the National Statistics, which reported a decrease of sales in January due to the snow affecting several areas of the United Kingdom. Kantar was not available for comments while Marks and Spencer refused to give out comments as well.

From politicians to pop idols, skinny jeans have been adorned by one and all from decades. The Ramones began the slim fitting jeans fashion in the 70s, and it has grown from strength to strength ever since. This variant of jeans easily grows into a habit, and one can’t help recognising this as one sees more of the same.

It’s amazing how different social groups lend their uniqueness to the manner in which they flaunt their skinny jeans. Hipsters like to roll the ankles and experiment with ill fitting crotches, sloanes prefer the high waist avatars, emos go flat footed and jazz up the jeans with loud belts, and skaters accessorise with sneakers and snapbacks. Today, you could hit any street of Britain and depend on bumping into people wearing skinny jeans.

Contrary to the belief that skinny jeans are for skinny people, a misconception that is fuelled by the name, these jeans are perfectly suitable for more or less any shape of the body, as is seen across the globe.

This fashion cuts across all social groups – from the next Queen of England to hotshots in the music fraternity of the likes of Justin Bieber and Lil Wayne, from Nigella Lawson, the sexy celebrity to Gareth Malone, Chorister-in-chief for BBC2.

Denims sell in several styles, and Whistle enlists 14 of them online. Jane Shepherdon, its chief executive, said, “The beginnings of this style can be traced back to the times when punk was reviving. I was a die-hard Clash fan, and that was the time when I started wearing skinny jeans. I recall how the jeans were going narrower by the season, until it seemed impossible to get inside them!”

Square Mile magazine is a luxury lifestyle publication that comes out on a monthly basis for affluent executives in the city, and February sees the launch of its first style issue. This glossy monthly already covers a vast and varied range of topics, from alternative investments and fine wines to financial affairs and fast cars, but this latest issue clearly marks a move into the arena of fashion.

“There’s a lot of pressure to look good in the City, from the trading floor to the boardroom,” explains Square Mile editor Mark Hedley. “It’s not about showing off, necessarily; it’s more about looking the part. People won’t take you seriously unless you’re dressed seriously. And when you’re dealing with money – whether it’s making it or looking after it – this is crucial.”

The February Style Issue will also launch the Square Mile Style Awards. Over the first half of 2013, Square Mile will be running a competition to find the most stylish man and woman in the City. Nominations will be made by readers online at squaremile.com and a panel of experts will help determine who wins the awards – and the bragging rights.

Contributors to the issue will include style guru Jeremy Langmead, fashion fanatic Josh Sims and watch expert Robin Swithinbank.

One of the main features will cover the evolving taste in men’s fashion in the City from the yuppie era to the present day.

In celebration of the debut Style Issue, Square Mile is also an official partner of London Fashion Weekend (21-24 Feb) and will be hosting an exclusive VIP evening in conjunction with the event.

Like every edition of Square Mile, the Style Issue will be available in print and on iPad. Having increased its print run during 2012, Square Mile now prints 50,000 copies every month and is distributed by both post and hand to subscribers and from various distribution points throughout the City.

Karl Lagerfeld has been quoted, in the Telegraph no less, as saying that nobody really needs high fashion. Taken out of context that remark could be rather confusing, since the man is a fashion icon himself as creative director of Chanel and Fendi plus his own Karl Lagerfeld brand. However, he did clarify the sentiment by explaining that people set a higher value on things they want than on basic boring things they need.

The implication is that the fashion industry is in the business of making people yearn to have what they see in glossy magazines and catwalk shows, and then supplying it at a price that virtually shouts, “This is a rare treasure! Never mind that you can’t afford it, you must have it!” Nor does Mr Lagerfeld apologize for that attitude; he says of himself that he’s “just a hired gun” in his profession, with customers who pay for his particular expertise.

At 79, the designer/ photographer has no intention of resting on his often controversial laurels. He is about to launch an exhibition of his own photos in London. His book ‘The Little Black Jacket’ is getting five-star reviews on sites like Barnes & Noble, and his signature thick white hair, dark glasses and – oh yes – black jacket are just as impressive as they ever were, if not more so.

Lagerfeld has his own website, of course, but says he never looks at it because he would lose his spontaneity. As for where he gets his inspiration, it comes from everywhere, like “. . . a building with a TV antenna. I can get it all,” he says.

Over the years Lagerfeld has offended a lot of his peers and humiliated more than a few; he’s known for saying whatever he thinks and doing whatever he wants, and it’s been working very well for him. He told a BBC reporter that he’s in good health – doesn’t smoke or drink or over-eat or do drugs, and his head “. . . is like a crystal ball.” There’s no need to slow down or for that matter pay attention to any detractors.

Throughout spring, maxi dresses have slowly been popping up at the top designer stores, but now they have sprinkled down into regular fashion stores as well making the long and flowery dresses something that you should take look into this summer.

The appeal of a maxi dress is obvious; it offers full coverage, lots of leg room for moving around, and overall is extremely comfortable if you choose a dress that is made out of soft materials. In a way, it is like taking a bath in a large vat of cotton and you cannot get much more comfortable than that.

The most popular way to wear a maxi dress is in one solid colour with some light accents that has a mid waist belt built into it, or you can choose your own belt to add your own touch of fashion to the dress. At the same time, you also will want to make sure to choose a contrasting flat to pair with the dress so that when the corners of your shoe peek out from under the bottom of the hemline the flats add a nice spirit to the dress.

Flowers are also popular on maxi dresses, especially floral patterns because the floral prints are light and breezy and the very embodiment of summer. It is also an easy way to make sure that your dresses stand out from each other, as significantly different floral prints will make each dress look unique.

This way you can get away with owning several dresses and they will still remain significantly different from each other. Choosing to pair these with a shoe that matches the flower on the dress can be a great way to add a bit of personality to the ensemble as well.

On the other hand, if you are a bit more a fashion voyeur you might consider pairing a maxi dress with a heel if it has a slit running down the back of the side. Many women in the fashion magazines actually model long dresses with large heels that somewhat pop out of the slits in the dress, adding some extra flair and certainly some extra subtle sexuality to the dress. This can be a great way to take something that might seem pretty normal, and turn it into something that is quite stunning.

Overall, if you are choosing a maxi dress that has accents and several colours in it you will want to go with a dress that is light and bright. This is especially true if you choose a dress with really light fabric attached to it. On the other hand, if you are choosing a solid dress then you are better off going with dark subtle tones such as teal or beige since one colour can be overwhelming and you want to resist looking like drab when you take the dress out on the town.

If intellectual fashion does exist, then it is certainly led by Martine Sitbon who recently created a collection of clothes that were incredibly elegant, but also had significant cultural references in them. It is clear when you see the clothes that have been created that they are well thought out, and the cuts and fabrics, clearly reflect her own thoughts.

Sitbon is the Rue du Mail designer, and she founded the company in Paris. Much of the collections reference the 1960′s idea of the future, and she also incorporates the ideas of several other notable designers including Pierre Cardin.

The 1960′s were a time when the media was first beginning to pay serious attention to fashion, and people were becoming generally more interested in it. Today her clothes have a very retro look, and patent leather often makes an appearance. Despite her rather old themes, she still somehow manages to make clothes look cutting-edge, and they never feel old, despite the retro appearance.

She recently commented, “When I create clothes I want to create and for girls who want to look pretty, but also want to have a certain toughness about them. This is a look that I think is very individual, as it certainly gives a person a lot of character.”

This is probably why trench coats as well as parkas have made a strong appearance in the collection for next year, and probably why she has also been tempted to move into creating clothes for men.

The Lakmé Fashion Week Winter/Festive 2012 looked like it was going to turn into a bit of a damp squib at the start with people commenting about the few numbers of celebrities both on and off the catwalk. Things had changed, however, by the third day and the murmurs had changed to rapturous applause due to the both conventional and outlandish designs on display.

From the moment Sidhartha Mallya made his first catwalk appearance, on the second day, in a fantastic black tuxedo from designer Komal Sood, you knew the Lakme Fashion Week wasn’t going to be so bad after all. Then came Amy Jackson and you could literally hear the sharp intake of breath when she hit the runway. She looked amazing in a maroon and black sari from Pernia Qureshi which had just the right amount of edginess.

Television host, Mini Mathur, made an appearance on the third day and she was wearing an embroidered red lehenga designed by Payal Kapoor. And then, finally, there was designer-turned politician Shaina NC who nearly stopped the show completely wearing tie-dye designs by Shruti Sancheti. So in the end it was a roaring success for all involved.

The Duchess of Cambridge has managed to make the top of the International Best Dressed list at Vanity Fair for the third year in a row. Her title will officially be announced in the glossy this September, but it is something to be proud of now given how many top fashion figures she had to beat in order to get the title including Bull Cunningham, Les Seydoux, Jessica Chastain, and Diane Kruger.

One of the reasons that she won such high praise was the fact that she often chooses home grown designers from the UK such as Matthew Williamson, Alexander McQueen, and a handful of high street brands. In the magazine spread Kate Middleton is pictured with her husband Prince William wearing a Jenny Packham gown in a photo taken in May.

Another shot shows Kate in a vibrant red Alexander McQueen number that she wore to the premier of the London War Horse back in January. The Duchess is known for almost always wearing British labels as well as always being in style. One of her go- to dressers is Roksanda Illincic who has been very helpful with her wardrobe choices.

Middleton is not the only Royal to be featured in Vanity Fair however as it seems that the young Royals are just now coming into their own in the Royal Family with Princes William and Harry also getting their own nods for being fashion conscious.

Prince Harry in particular made the list at number 27 for best dressed while the HRH Crown Princess Mary of Denmark came in at 32 on the list and Monaco’s Charlotte Casiraghi came in at number 35. Of course, all of the notable names in fashion also made the list such as Stacey Bendent, Erika Bearman, and Stella McCartney.

The Teen Choice Awards recently took place and one of the most notable guests attending was Demi Lovato who wore an incredible outfit. This is the 14th time that the event has taken place and, as usual, it has been hosted in Los Angeles. As you would expect at one of these glamorous events she changed her outfits several times during the evening.

Many people took note of the incredible outfits she was wearing and even the host of the event, Kevin McHale, the star of Glee, decided to stop the proceedings for a moment to compliment her on her style. Rather spontaneously he decided to comment, “I just like to say right now that Demi is looking really great, can we just take a moment to appreciate that.”

At the start of the event she was wearing a rather futuristic style dress that was incredibly fashion forward. When she arrived at the event all eyes were certainly on her and she really had a great way of making the outfit work.

The hair was worn in a ponytail and this worked very well with the dress and all around this gave her a very elegant look. She was not the only star attending the event to put a lot of effort into the clothes they were wearing. Selena Gomez was also at the event wearing an incredible dress by Dsquared2 which was combined with a pair of incredible high heels by Herve Leger.

Many of the stars who were attending the event were obviously hoping to take home the award for being the Choice Fashion Idle. There is only one star who can win this award and neither of the above people won it. Instead, the award went to Justin Bieber. Miley Cyrus won the award for Choice Female Hottie.
