Wider brims compose most of the In list in casual hats this summer. Not only are they great for shading your face and neck from the youth-stealing UV-B rays that age us, they also coordinate well with almost every casual look you want and work well with different materials and clothing styles. However, some terrific narrow and mid-width brims are peeking over heads this season as well.
The perennial wide, floppy brimmed sun hat by Gabriella, whether straw or cloth, can be worn snugly positioned on top of your head or set back for a more innocent look. Unless you purchase a hat specifically made for a particular piece of clothing, don’t mix stripe with stripe. Keep one or the other in a solid design. Which one depends entirely on you and your style.
In a slight variation of the trimmed, neat sun hat style, also making a respectable appearance is the unfinished floppy brim. While seen most often in its natural off-white colour, add a coordinated scarf or band to add to the casual flair this look lends. The crown is usually semi-formed instead of the usual rounded or rimmed crown, but the lack of formal structure merely adds to this hat’s style. Great for wear to the park, beach or just in the garden.
For a relaxed, carefree look for either men or women, the “fishing hat” with it’s medium-width brim and semi-formed dome lends both shade and complete “coolness” in a look. Wear this hat to picnics, parties, camping, or while running errands, visiting friends or walking the dog. The look means casual, and the “no stress allowed” look to this hat defines relaxation.
The Trilby style of hat with its jaunty front brim pointing the way and the curled back brim transitions from day to night without a pause. Depending on the exact outfit, women can even wear this style. Large-cut blazers and pleated slacks work very well with this almost Rat Pack chapeau style.
The original Trilby hat with its entire brim rolled up brings a distinct look for narrow-brim lovers. Worn forward on the brow hints at hustle and bustle while wearing it back on the head lends the complete opposite look. The most popular Trilbies provide a different colour on the brim than on the rest of the hat, so choose the combination that works well for the outfits you have in mind.
Lastly, though it’s not often worn during the heat of the day, the floppy-brimmed felt hat is actually enjoying a popularity renewal. Its versatility and non-conformist conformity make this hat style reappear time and again. Excellent for late spring and early autumn nights, the floppy felt hat comes in a whole rainbow of colours to match any clothing style and budget.
