Street Fashion

What you wear definitely says something about you. In extreme cases it can really express your personality in a way that sets you apart from anyone else. Having clothes that are custom made, by yourself or by having someone else make them for you is the only way to really make sure you have a totally unique look that is yours and yours alone.

Of course, custom clothing can easily go from the sublime to the ridiculous and a lot of that will come down to personal taste and just how far you think things can go before they simply look too far ‘out there’.

Whether your starting point in a classic idea that you customise with your own unique twist or perhaps something that you really think hasn’t been done before, custom clothing can be fun, save you money and help make your own unique look.

To help give you some inspiration for your own creations, here are five unique pieces of clothing we think are amazing:

1. Psychedelic Square Dress

Aurore Baron is based in Vendée, France. The French have a long history making unique and one-off Haute couture pieces specifically for one individual to wear so it’s hardly surprising the first entry to our list is French in origin. Baron’s homemade ‘Psychedelic Squares Dress’ is a great idea that utilises bright colours without being flashy or loud. It also has a great mix of retro and contemporary looks to make for a unique piece.

2. Fringe Suits

Carla the Designer in Stockton-on-Tees in the UK makes a range of different things to order. All you need to do is give her your measurements and exact requirements and she looks after the rest. Custom clothing at its easiest!

Her ‘reggae style’ fringe suits (www.carla-the-designer.com/en/27-fringe-suits.html) are made up of everything from miniskirts and boob tubes to bra-tops and high-waisted skirts. Matching cuffs, headbands and boots top off a full ensemble that would make you stand out in any crowd.

3. Exotic

Lena Santana has been hailed as leading the custom clothing revolution. She was born in Salvador, educated in London and has lived in Rio and São Paulo in Brazil during her life. It is these influences that come out in her exciting designs which are based around eco-friendly designs and pretty patterns to show that custom made can look as good as catwalk.  Read more at jungledrumsonline.com/articles/latin-americans-in-london/material-girl/

4. Black Stretch Velvet Dress

Homemade designs don’t have to be elaborate to work well and sometimes the simple and classic approach is the one that can work best for great results. Take this black stretch velvet homemade dress from Brooks in Tuscaloosa in the USA. Fitting in with her simple yet classic designs it shows that making your own custom clothes can be a great way to find your own unique style.  Some great examples here www.chictopia.com/photo/show/605037-Velvet-black-stretch-velvet-homemade-dress-black-metal-belt-vintage-belt

5. Leavers Hoodies

A perennial favourite in the world of bespoke clothing, leavers hoodies are the perfect way to celebrate your years in education. While there are plenty of firms who offer customisable clothing for such occasions, our favourite is Clifton Clothing’s leavers hoodies which give you free reign of every aspect of the design. They even offer a unique service which has the name of every student in the graduating class added to the hood lining rather than taking up the entire back of the hoodie – perfect!

According to sources from Kantar Worldpanel, the M&S fashion brand lost 0.4% of their shares in the market and underwent a 1.3% decrease in retail sales in the weeks after the 20th of January. However, as much as M&S suffers through the ordeal, high end brand Zara and lower end budget chain Primark showed a doubling of sales, as with H&M, Next and Debenhams as reported by the Sunday Times.

Because of the increase in other retail chains and the decrease in sales at Marks and Spencer, there will be a lot of pressure on CEO Marc Bolland especially after the devastating results that came after the Christmas holidays. Studies show that sales have decreased by 1.8% in the United Kingdom from the 29th of December up to those following weeks as well as a devastating 3.8% blow on general merchandise.

The Marks and Spencer group had taken ex Debenhams and Jaegar chief Belinda Earl to improve the face of womenswear and ultimately give the brand a once-over. However, Earl had mentioned that their last trading gig had felt that it was a “greatly promotional and very challenging” retail market and that it lacked time to further apply their plans on improving the brand.

Thus, the new Autumn Winter collection spearheaded by Earl will only be launched this July, quite late considering that other retail chains launch their collections right before the season starts. Judging from their increase in sales, it looks like avid shoppers are more attracted to low priced fashion that Primark offers.

The Kantar figures were taken from the National Statistics, which reported a decrease of sales in January due to the snow affecting several areas of the United Kingdom. Kantar was not available for comments while Marks and Spencer refused to give out comments as well.

corby Corby city centre shows off its fashion senseIt was in Corby city centre that the latest fashion trends were being shown recently. A catwalk had been set up in the centre of the town to give some inspiration to shoppers about what to buy to be in fashion this season. The show involved models displaying clothes that were easily available to local residents.

It was not just models at the event, there were singers and dancers too. Sky 1 had the Trinity Warriors from their Got to Dance programme. There were also the band Out of the Shadows who have links with the TV show Britain’s Got Talent.

The catwalk was to show off clothes that were available at local shops that are affordable by the everyday consumer. The clothes included collections from TK Maxx, Burtons, River Island and Primark.

One of the visitors to the event commented, “It is really fascinating to be able to see all these new fashions. The problem is, when you see the outfits so well put together it just makes you want to go and buy the whole thing.”

Another attendee commented, “This is the second year we have come and it is a really great experience. You can see the clothes on the catwalk and just walk into the shops and easily find the clothes you saw as they are well marked.”

H&M UNICEF collection

January 12, 2011

hm 257x300 H&M UNICEF collectionFrom February 3, the massive Swedish clothing chain H&M will be launching a collection in 10 stores with UNICEF benefiting from 10% of all sales.

The collection, designed by both H&M and the young Swedish fashion blogger Elin Kling, will only be available to Swedish customers, so those of us in the UK will have to plan a vacation or business venture to one of the main cities of Stockholm, Gothenberg, Malmö or Uppsala to get a chance at buying them.

The blond ‘fashionista’ Kling has reflected her own style in the collection with a typically new Swedish minimalist and modern approach, with bohemian influences which shows Kling as a spicy and raw individualist. This particularly shows itself in the decoration and materials of her pieces, nine of which are fashion and two being accessories. The balance of extremes in these pieces illustrating the range and talent of Elin Kling’s vision.

The innovative venture for H&M fashion is drawing in vast global attention from the fashion community with previous collaborations with well known designers throughout the community featuring such names as Rei Kawakubo from Comme des Garcons, Stella McCartney, Karl Lagerfeld and of course Matthew Williamson.

Previous fashion collaborations with H&M have entertained vast crowds and enjoyed sell-out collections throughout the world of fashionable consumers. This particular collection features everything from uneven hems on washed leather jackets to chains hidden just under the neckline of dresses and everything in between, truly an exciting concept in the upcoming Swedish market.

parka 300x222 The North is back in fashionThe North is back with the northerners once again creating their own brand of casual wear that will launch for a second time this summer with a new website and a new range of products.

The second time around, the North will offer casual clothing to those who have a strong identity including hoodies, polos, hats, and accessories each of which will have the slogan “The North” on them which pretty much denotes where the wearer is from.

The clothing brand was first launched in 1996 to celebrate their heritage with simple clothes and no frills that show no concern for the obvious frilly, fickly fashion trends of the London media.

Director of The North, Martin James, stated that the brand is created with the traditional Northerner in mind, the type that enjoys good times, loud music, and a feeling of superiority when their southern neighbours come up in discussion.

James added that over the past few years they have continued to receive requests for new products which has made them feel that now is the time to start creating casual clothing again.  He also expanded on the fact that the clothing line does not discriminate based on sex, race, or class or even wear in the North one lives, but is instead a fun way to claim their heritage.

Top Street Fashion Brands

February 20, 2009

Street fashion goes from strength to strength among the youth in the UK. There are so many street fashion brands available which means more choice when it comes to inventing and reinventing yourself and your image. There are several reasons why street fashion does so well. Clothing is more accessible, with extremely reasonable prices and incredible sales occurring almost perpetually in some cases. In addition, kids are more fashion savvy from an earlier age, and are more eager than ever to move into the fashion realms of the street wise teenager sooner than the kids of previous generations. Probably the most determining factor is that young people are prepared to spend more money on their image, and this includes buying street fashion on a regular basis.

The general ethos of street fashion is provision of easy to wear clothes. The fashion statement is casual and fun and although you may spend hours in front of a mirror deciding what to wear, street fashion will always look great on a young and vibrant body. Bench has been one of the rising stars in street fashion for some time. Their designer casual wear includes funnel neck track tops, hooded slim coats, super stylish chunky strapped watches, bags and zip fronted track tops, all proudly emblazened with the brand name in bold letters. This practical form of advertising certainly works for them and has gone along way to promoting their name as a leader in street fashion. Playboy is another brand whose bunny logo is familiar to us all. Having moved away from the bunny girl and night club image of yesteryear, Playboy has succeeded in getting its finger in every fashion and accessory pie going. From socks to earrings, belts to bags this brand logo is proudly displayed by pre-teens to grannies. Junk Food is a brand favoured by a host of young and beautiful celebrities. Lindsey Lohan has been seeing sporting one of their Top Gun tee shirt and Paris Hilton has gone for a Beatles silk screened tee. Junk Food is a cult brand who originated in Los Angeles 7 years ago. Ugg is another street fashion brand who has proved unbelievably popular with its slouchy fluff lined scruffy boots. It is not just the young who have gone for these boots, because they are so comfortable, warm and easy to wear. Street fashion would not be street fashion without trainers, and Converse are at the cutting edge with their constantly emerging new designs, such as their Allstars range.

The top street fashion brands are constantly evolving, allowing the wearer to evolve too, without getting into a fashion rut. The need for a new and expressive fashion item is addressed by their designers and loved by their followers and Bench clothing is no exception.
