1st April 2010 will see the iconic brand of Dr Martens turn 50 years old. The make has survived the test of time, starting out as a simple working man’s shoe, ideal for the policeman, postmen, and the British working class. It has since grown into the symbol of anti-establishment and non-conformity and continues to make a statement by those who wear them.

From punk rock to ska, from indie to grunge and emo, Dr Martens boots have played a crucial role in British culture and heritage. It was a brand that was most aligned with anarchy and although you can buy a pair adorned with flowers now, they still have the edge over their competitors when it comes to making a statement. Theses classic shoes have been worn by Sid Vicious, Billy Bragg, Pete Townshend, Kurt Cobain and Morrissey amongst others and the list goes on to include Madonna, Kate Moss, Agyness Deyn even the Pope! The Dr Martens shoe still balances that fine line between fashion and comfort.

Alice in Wonderland actress Jemma Price has been modelling the new collection from

Julianne Moore and Zac Efron, who each served as a presenter during the the 2010 Oscars, were both wearing Calvin Klein.

Julianne Moore wore a custom antique white beaded strapless gown with crescent pleated detail designed by Francisco Costa, Women’s Creative Director, Calvin Klein Collection.

Zac Effron’s clothes were designed by Italo Zucchelli, Men’s Creative Director of the Calvin Klein Collection.

Milan fashion week back on course

The new autumn/winter fashion trends shown at Milan Fashion Week seem to indicate optimism and audacity. After a serious decline of 15 percent last year, Italy’s fashion industry is coming back strong.

The emphasis at the January showing was on ‘new’ to the point of avant-garde in many cases. A lot of fur, touches and splashes of bright colors, and big time creativity made for a spectacular presentation.

Designers and directors are looking at the economy in general and to some extent they are thinking of who can afford to buy their creations and what will appeal the most. Neiman Marcus fashion director Ken Downing mentioned the idea that women love new additions; they aren’t likely to buy something they already have.

If this is true, the options are certainly out there. The collections presented striking contrasts and mixing of fabrics, textures, colors, prints and accessories. Armani’s collection included sleeveless dresses in tiger stripes and embroidery, and Gucci offered dresses sporting metal collars and cuffs, with slits to show some skin.

Donatella Versace used zips in her biker chic line, putting them on jackets, trousers and dresses matched with chunky-heel boots. Thomas Maier, creative director for Bottega Veneta, put contrasting leather tops and wool sleeves on silk dresses, while Dolce and Gabbana presented their second line with knit tops combined with chiffon skirts and furry boots. Blumarine were all sexy coulorful shorts.

Though a lot of the latest creations are striking and even startling, designers are aiming to entice a wide range of buyers, and Marigay McKee of Harrods said of the new showings that they are “more of an evolution than a revolution.”

A few more sunny days early in the season could see this year being yet another record breaker for these über-cool sandals.

Naomi Campbell helping to sell Fashion for Relief T-shirts in aid of Haiti at Westfield London

Supermodel Naomi Campbell’s is hosting a pop-up shop at Westfield London for fashion Relief on 26th February. She will be lending a hand in selling the official Fashion for Relief T-shirt designed by Vivienne Westwood.

The T-shirts, which were unveiled last week at Naomi Campbell’s spectacular Fashion for Relief show at London’s Somerset House and worn on the catwalk by a host of celebrities including Dame Shirley Bassey, Beverley Knight, The Saturdays, Ronnie Corbett, Cesc Fabregas, Nicola Roberts and Kimberley Walsh from Girls Aloud.

NY fashion week was all layers

Layering was one of the top trends during the New York Fashion week last week on its sixth day using fabrics that when compiled together created a textured look.

Designers Alexander Wang and Peter Som both used it on models that looked as if they emerged from closets wearing their entire wardrobe.

Another popular trend was sleeves that contrasted with the rest of the outfit either separated by colour or by fabric which was seen on designs by Derek Lam and Chris Benz.

In order to get these fashions right, you will need a long sleeve t-shirt to slide under these designs and a nice roomy coat to go over top of it.

Another notable titbit from last week’s fashion week was the Roderte runway drama, which showed insiders how Laura and Kate Mulleavy have become big names in fashion in a relatively short period of time.

Their collection was themed with the half conscious state one finds themselves in at night while drifting off to sleep utilizing soft lace dresses in dusty palettes that resembled a mix of wallpaper prints and vintage lingerie.

Also in the Roderte collection were chunky knits that looked worn in a way that might resemble your favourite sweater after a few years of use, but in a great luxury way.

Vera Wang of course brought black to the runway showing once again how black can be utilized as a light colour with the title ‘The Bride Wore Black.’ Although black may be technically a non-colour, Wang brought it to life using a yin and yang contrast such as s Nehru jacket outfitted with sexy barely there sleeves.
