Gucci announced that Sarah Burton will take over as creative director in the wake of Alexander McQueen’s death which occurred in February of this year.
Although some thought that Gucci would not be able to carry on without him after the fashion designer committed suicide, the owners of the luxury brand quickly moved forward to find a replacement, given the fact the brand still has a huge commercial potential.
Burton’s appointment is little surprise to those in the fashion world as she was the right hand of McQueen and in October presented the introduction of his last partially finished collection for the Paris Fashion Week.
At the time of McQueen’s suicide, the 16 outfits were only 80% complete, but Burton took over with a design team of five and saw them through to critical acclaim from fashion critics.
Alexander McQueen chief executive, Jonathon Akeroyd, said that Burton has a profound understanding of the vision that McQueen held and with her aid the company is ready to enter a new chapter in Gucci history.
Burton is originally from Manchester and studied in 1997 at Central St. Martin’s College then she joined the McQueen design studio one year prior to graduation. By 2000 she was promoted to head of womenswear design.
She stated that her goal is to create a group of modern clothes which was Lee’s vision. Her first collection will be displayed in June in a pre-collection show with her first full spring collection due for the Paris runways in October.
