What are the spectacles and sunglasses trends this year?

Hair and fashion trends change every year or at least every couple of years but the trends with respect to glasses rarely ever change. If we go back the last 5 years, the only thing that may have really come into fashion is super sized shades. Even though this is the only change, it doesn’t mean that you can wear just about anything. If you are a fashioinista and really want to stay trendy, or maybe even ahead of times, you have to choose correctly. There are certain brands and companies and designers who have got just the right look this 2008.

Wayfarers by Ray Ban

This was one of the greatest trends in 2007 but Kate Moss has made this trend continue this year as well. This vintage trend is not ready to die out. The classic black frames are still in and so are the coloured ones, but what will surely rock this year are dual coloured ones.

70s Plastic Frames- Very Thick

It is the revival of the 1970s and the fading away of the 1980s. This is going to be very obvious on the runways this year. The frames will be thick and made of plastic. Many designers are making these glasses. Proenza has a fabulous pair for women. It has been seen in their Fall/Winter 2008-2009 collection. Polo and Ralph Lauren too have a wonderful pair- for men. Yohji Yamamoto, Dries Van Noten and Raf Simons too have some nice designs. This 70s look is not only in for sunglasses but also for spectacles. The librarian look is in. The glasses are big and bold. It really can be very sexy when those spectacles are teamed with voluminous hair and glossy lips and flawless makeup. The spectacles are loud and wild as seen on Michael Kor’s Autumn/Winter 08-09 runway.

Choosing that right pair is important. Avoid the styles seen on Betsey Johnson’s Autumn/Winter collection. For a safe pair of glosses, go for the 1960s inspired glasses as seen in Mulberry’s Spring collection.

John Lennon Glasses

It could also be teamed with the plastic thick glasses trend, but these round glasses can also be worn in a metallic frame. It has been included in Moschino’s Cheap and Chic Autumn collection this year and also Karen Walker’s Spring Collection last year. Even though this has been named after John Lennon, it is only for women. Men will only end up looking terrible.

Oversized Sunglasses

This is the most popular trend this year. And has been for the last five years. There is just nothing that can ever come even a little close to this look.

Tortoise shell rims

Fur may rule the fashion scene but faux tortoise shell rules the spectacles scene.

Aviators

This started in 2007 with the matrix movies and the trend is still in. Wear a pair meant for the opposite sex and you really will stand out in a crowd. Take a cue from Gucci’s winter collection.
