Clothing at work has always been a troublesome question for many. Usually when there is a dress code, there is no problem in deciding what to wear. Formal is formal. But when there is no dress code, what does one wear? How casual can you get? Most offices today prefer not to have a fixed code since it denies people the basic right to individuality. But there are still unmarked barriers that one should try to not cross ever. What company do you work for? How are your colleagues? Is your way of thinking similar to others or are you different? You need to ask yourself all these questions.
If you work for a serious corporate company, you need to be in a suit. You just can’t walk around in a little top at a law firm. Certain fashion discipline must be maintained. At an ad agency, you could go a little casual. Sexy? That is one word that anyone and everyone at work should avoid at all costs.
Are you an attention seeker? Well that is not a bad thing. Many love being in the limelight. But dressing up sexy manner that tends towards provocative is not the way to get that attention. Sexy clothing might just get you praises and maybe even a few genuine compliments but you do not want to be topic of mindless gossip when people get together at the water fountain. And you definitely do not want to be ever sexually harassed. It may be easy to file a case against the person, but you need to ask yourself this- didn’t you ask for it?
Okay, so you are really attracted to a co worker. He doesn’t seem to notice you. So what do you do? Sexy dressing may be the easy way out but it is alright only till it starts others feel uncomfortable. The moment it makes your colleges or even your clients and customers easy, you know that you have gone too far. You can still scream that you are a woman without being provocative. Dress feminine. Wearing lace and ruffles is not forbidden. But wearing daring skirts and shirts are.
If you have a job where you interact with clients all day long, your dressing should represent your company’s views, not your own. Once again, it all depends on your job. If you are the creative head of a company, you can show off your uniquely artsy side in your clothing, but, it should definitely not cross the border of provocation. Subtlety speaks louder than actually being loud. A picture speaks a thousand words. Innocence does not mean naivety. A flashy person just looks like she is on the prowl. A tigress at work is not exactly what companies are looking for. People might also do the same with the hope of attracting seniors and getting promoted. But that really does not happen. More often than not, a thorough professional gets the job. So to really benefit at the workplace, it is always the safest and wisest to dress like a professional, because after all, that is what you are.
