The arrival of winter spells colder, darker weather and as such our wardrobes naturally reflect these changes – out with the floaty dresses and strappy tops, and in with big coats and jumpers, scarves and hats. Once you’ve got the clothes for the season sorted, you’ll want to think about how to maximise on accessories to take advantage of current trends and introduce a bit of glamour into the mix.

Watches

The advent of the mobile phone has spelled the gradual demise of the wristwatch but during the winter months they can offer a real timepiece advantage over the mobile – you don’t have to rummage in your bag and pockets or take your gloves off to work them. Plus watches offer a real dash of design to an outfit – classic gold models are the perfect accompaniment to a smart wool suit or little black dress.

Broaches

Broaches have taken a backseat in the jewellery world in the past few decades, but cutting edge designers are offering new takes on the traditional piece. Classic options such as the Camay are still brilliant as the finishing touch for any outfit, traditional or modern, but there are also new materials and shapes on the market that incorporate punky, retro imagery and offer the perfect solution for a splash of colour or shape on a dark winter coat.

Hat Pins

Even more old school than broaches, the humble hat pin is very much overlooked these days, but is the perfect accompaniment for silk scarves and hats. Whether you choose to opt for a mohair beret or uber-now Fedora, a pin will not only keep your head piece in place, but also introduce a little individuality to your outfit.

Belts

All the rage in recent years, belts really come into their own with a winter wardrobe. Whether you pick a slim, velvet design to wear over a camel cardigan, or a thick cinch flecked with gold or silver to enhance your waistline with a pencil skirt and blouse combo.

Earrings and necklaces

Drop and dangly earrings are impractical with scarves and big jumpers – but you don’t need to substitute your style with a simple stud, take your pick from big pearls, statement gold and silver, and tidy hoop designs. For necklaces opt for chunky designs that will make a statement against a dark colour and hold their own over a thick top.
