The power of the internet with its videos of now defunct Christian Dior designer John Galliano shouting out that he loves Hitler, has the fashion world up in arms. The couturier has been with Dior’s fashion house form 15 years was allegedly making anti-Semitic comments from as long ago as October when a woman came forward saying he made insults in Paris at the trendy brasserie La Perle.
Actress Natalie Portman the new face of Miss Dior Cherie perfume, who is Jewish, has expressed her hurt from the comments. Galliano has issued an apology saying that anti-Semitism and racism have no part in our society and he apologized for causing any offense to anyone.
But he will pay for his crime and Paris will make sure, quite literally. He has been ordered to stand trial on charges of public insult based on the origin, religious affiliation, race or ethnicity by the city’s court with the possibility of over $30,000 in fines and up to six months in prison. The country has used the same law to punish others in the past and to incite racial hatred in France is a serious crime.
He still showcased his 2011-2012 fall/winter collection for three weeks at the Paris Fashion Week despite the fact that he was noticeably absent and to try and help one of the models at his display wore an obvious Star of David on her arm.
Meadows, a rehab center in Arizona where Elton John and Donatella Versace were treated, is where Galliano is said to be after being encouraged by friends and other colleagues to get treatment for his problems with alcohol.
Dior owned by parent company Louis Vuitton Moet Hennessy without a top designer and questions remain as to whom will take over that role in the famously chic fashion giant and only time will give us the answer.
