Alpine ski resorts particularly those in the French Ski Resorts in the Southern Alps can be surprisingly hot, just look at the skiers when they come off a plane at the airport and you would be forgiven if you thought they had been to a Caribbean resort. However it can be really cold as well, particularly if there is cloud cover and it is snowing. The nights in all ski resorts can be very cold and good warm clothing is necessary when going to a bar or “window shopping” in the resort.

Good quality layering clothing is essential in all snow sports and it does not just have to keep you warm, it will keep you dry too. By layering we mean that you should put several layers of clothing on at the start of the day which will keep you warm on a cold day but will also make it easier if you need to remove a layer or two when you heat up through exertion, or if they day becomes warmer. Modern ski wear is now breathable and a first layer of this material will keep warmth in but also direct perspiration away from the body, ski wear made from manmade fabrics are superior to cotton. Next you would put on an insulating layer which should consist of a thin sweater, lightweight shirt or sweatshirt. The outer layer of ski wear is the ski jacket, or if preferred a ski suit and we would recommend that this is manufactured from one of the low profile synthetic insulators rather than a heavy or bulky down jacket. If you are not opting for a ski suit then the ski pants or salopettes can be bought that match the jacket, or if not, are made from the same material; either insulated or shell style. Please note that jeans are entirely unsuitable for any form of winter sport.

When your thinking of booking your Skiing holidays, you can always have a look on eBay for clothing as you can often pick up cheap clothes there from frequent skiers

Goggles are an essential ski wear; they cut the glare and protect the eyes from snow spray and they are essential if it is snowing when out skiing. As goggles are tinted they are also essential in order for the skier to perceive variations in the contours of the snow surface if most conditions. When you buy a pair of goggles make sure that they have double-lens and adequate ventilation that will prevent fogging. Helmets are optional pieces of skiwear, although not absolutely necessary, however those new to skiing should wear them and as they can be rented from all ski resorts it is not necessary to buy one.
