1 Stay Ahead of the Curve Denim Trends for 2012

Jeans Stay Ahead of the Curve Denim Trends for 2012They’re a wardrobe staple and we couldn’t live without them! So we thought we’d take a look at what 2012 has in store for us in the jeans department. Skinny looks set to stay but there are plenty of new twists in store to keep the look fresh. High street stores like Next are already unveiling their new 2012 collections of jeans for women, so you can shop most of these trends on the high street now.

Since Kate Moss made skinny jeans the denim de rigueur in 2006, the trend just keeps going. Skinny fit looks set to remain essential jeanswear for 2012, albeit with some new twists. Next year, it’s all about texture. From velvet to cord, suede to leather – that’s denim with a leather look, designers have been playing with fabrics to keep the skinny look fresh. Look out for coated jeans too, already part of the new J Brand collection, for jeans with sheen.

Cocktail jeans are another skinny update. Already spotted on Kate and Sarah Jessica Parker, it’s a sure sign that this is a serious trend in the making. Cocktail jeans are skinny denims in sophisticated animal prints, from leopard to snakeskin, as well as denim with a metallic sheen. High street stores are already stocking up on this trend and celebrities across the board have been stepping out in the snakeskin jeans of the moment – the Current/Elliott Stiletto.

As for colour, designers have gone all autumnal. Vintage shades of deep wine, bottle green, berry reds, moss and chocolate take over from the preppy pastel shades we’re used to seeing in spring. These shades all tie in nicely with the trend for jeans in alternative materials like suede, velvet and cord too.

J Brand are no strangers to setting the trends when it come to denim dressing. Their jodhpur jeans collection is making waves on the celebrity fashion circuit, and the trend is already making its way into some high street stores. Look out for equestrian inspired denim, in chocolate browns and beige, featuring velvet and suede patches and detailing.

If you’re fed up of skinny, there are a couple of alternative fits that are set to be just as big next year. Tying in with the 70’s trend, the high rise flare is about as far from skinny as you’re likely to get. Perfect for a boho spring/summer vibe, team them with wedges and a lightweight blouse or simple tee, tucked in to show off that high waistline.

If the 70’s look’s not for you, try the slouch skinny alternative. Gap have already added these to their new collection – a fit that’s still slim, with a low rise, but slouched at the ankle or with a dropped crotch. They’re great for keeping your look slim without that sprayed-on denim look.
