How important really is clothing? Isn’t it just meant to cover our bodies up? How did clothes evolve? Do we really know that? Most of us don’t. Then how has the fashion industry become one of the top revenue generators in the world? Well, now with the different fads that hit the social scene, it is not a wonder that designers are doing so well for themselves. With al the different look that designers keep experimenting with, we get suckered in to change ourselves. Most of the times, a new look is an accident and that changes to a craze with people all over the world.
We have seen a return of many styles in the last decade. We cannot really say that the 2000s have had a definite look. Styles gone by have revisited the fashion scene with new enthusiasm. We term them retro or vintage and say it is totally different where it basically is an old style with a twist.
When we talk about the rockabilly look and women, think of pin up girls of the 50s. These would be women like Jane Mansfield and Betty Page. The look includes the little black dress for a formal event and sailor dresses for daily wear. Those blue dresses used to be very popular with young girls in their teens. Guys had a totally different look though. Their clothes are fashioned on Elvis Presley and his fashion sense. These are basically fancy versions of the normal shirt with buttons at the front. Different versions of the bowling shirt too would be included in this look. We cannot forget the Hawaiian style too. The Hawaiian colourful shirts with floral prints became popular in the 50s when the rockabilly look ruled.
It was the flamboyant actors and musicians who popularised the look. Before them, no one really had the guts to wear such wild clothes. People were wearing western shirts, cowboy boots, and rhinestone pants and jackets. Men also never wore short sleeves before the rockabilly era. The classic look that Elvis Presley popularised was dressing up in two tones, including the dress and the shoes.
TO get the rockabilly look you need to start with a flawless face. Blend the foundation with a brush into all the creases and use a conealer under the eyes and on all possible scars and blemishes. Don’t use shimmery bronzer. Simply use a foundation in a shade darker than your normal skin tone. Use a face spray to get a glow. The eyes need to be cat like to really carry the clothes off. Flip the eyeliner up and out and top eyelashes with at least two coats of mascara. Lipstick? Well, the normal rule of make up is to never do up both the eyes and lips at one go but this is one exception. Lips should be blood red. To complete the look, go with the beehive look. Remember that it will not stay if your hair is squeaky clean. A little dirt is essential to give it staying power.
