With the newest trends obvious to every high street shopper, it is the vintage shops that should really get all the attention. Rather than people bringing you champagne or tonic water to drink, you lean over bin after bin trying quickly to find “the” perfect outfit for heading out on the town. Instead of having a personal shopping experience, you are literally fighting over a pair of pants with some person who swears she saw them first. No matter how it may sound, vintage shopping is something to uphold and to appreciate rather than to be put down.
Vintage shoppers are a unique breed. They are people who known fashion instinctively without the help of magazines, sales people and catwalks. They are the ones that walk in and can spot a silk ruffled tunic 10 rows away and know that they have to have it. They are immune to the musty assault of old clothes and can easily try on a few shirts at once without the help of a dressing room. And more and more, people are realizing that this is the chic way to shop. Sure, high street has all the latest trends, but vintage shops have the original trends, and that is sometimes better than any “one of a kind” dress that you can ever buy.
The appeal of vintage clothes over high street clothes is hard to articulate but what it really comes down to is the fact that it is more than just buying a piece of clothing. It is about buying a certain look that everyone else is trying to copy. There is no mass manufacturing, no “brand new” image that is shown on the latest copy of Vogue, and definitely no worrying about whether someone else is going to show up in what you are wearing. Vintage simply offers a piece of the past that people will notice as a unique style all your own. That is what is so chic about vintage shopping, and if you really look around, you’ll notice how many people are now going vintage rather than high street.
There is a strange, almost gratifying feeling when you find something that others would just deem as worthless, but when you put it on with your favorite heels, jeans or sweater you feel completely sure of how great it looks. From the 1960′s go-go boots to the 1930′s flapper dress, it is amazing what you can find in a vintage shop that you would never be able to find on high street. Remember, if you have style, grace, and the confidence to pull it all off, one man’s junk can certainly be your new treasure.
